Too Much Sitting Could Lead to Health Risks

Recent studies have discovered that inactivity spurred by sitting could increase the risk of disease.

While lack of physical exercise has been linked to disease, few studies have discovered any correlation from too much sitting.

"Epidemiologic and physiologic research on sedentary behavior suggests that there are novel health consequences of prolonged sitting time, which appear to be independent of those attributable to lack of leisure-time physical activity," commented Neville Owen, head of Behavioral Epidemiology at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia.

Researchers discovered after examining specific and distinct effects of physical activity and exercise among a large group of participants that those who sit for significant periods of time are more prone for an increased risk of premature death, most likely stemming from heart disease.

One report specifically focused on the effects of too much sitting with children and young adults, which revealed that these groups are at high risk if they spend most of their school days sitting at school, on transport and at home. Researchers encouraged further analysis regarding these groups in order to prevent potential disease onset.
