Increase in Allergy Symptoms, Asthma with Herbal Remedies

Many people who follow an allergy or asthma prevention medication regimen turn to herbal remedies for their allergy symptoms because they believe they will be just as effective as their prescriptions and are better on their body. People considering herbal remedies for their allergy symptoms or asthma should understand how herbal remedies work with their current medications.

A recent study in the February issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology reports that herbal remedies are to blame for a decreased quality of life and allergy and asthma complications.

The Problems Herbal Remedies Cause for Allergy and Asthma Sufferers
In this most recent study on the use of herbal remedies for allergy symptoms and asthma, researchers found that people who were using this form of treatment were less likely to continue prescribed medications. The reasons why these individuals stopped their prescribed medications chiefly lie in the hopes that herbal remedies would replace them.

Generally, people begin taking herbal remedies because they are known to have less side effects, however, with these decreased side effects also comes decreased effectiveness in some cases. Additionally, according to researchers, individuals who were more likely to quit their prescribed medications were the ones who had a history of medication non-compliance. This is interesting, since these individuals also had a history of hospitalization or intubation because of an asthma attack.

The Use of Herbal Remedies for Allergy Symptoms
It's important to note that it's not the herbal remedies themselves that are causing ill effects on allergy and asthma sufferers, it's the discontinuation of prescribed medication. If you are considering starting herbal remedies, keep in mind that you need to take them in conjunction with your prescribed medication. It's also important to speak to your doctor before you start any herbal remedy since some of them can cause a drug interaction decreasing the effectiveness of your prescribed medication.
